Starting every battle with 5 points of supershielding helps enormously in cutting down damage taken. While a system is recovering from ion damage, if it takes additional ion damage, its cooldown is extended -and- more of the system becomes disabled, so focus firing on a single system with ion damage can result in it being completely disabled. If you're heading that route, you might as well get a Vulcan and have a weapon that actually deals damage.
